Kurchatov Institute has been working for more than 80 years for the country and the world. In 1943, in the most difficult year for the country, the staff of Laboratory No. 2 started building an atomic shield, making a scientific and technological breakthrough that ensured peace on Earth for decades.
And for almost all these years, Ukraine was present in our works, research, friendships and family ties. In 1930s I.V. Kurchatov contributed much to the development of nuclear physics in Ukraine, due to which colleagues from Kharkov PhisTech later joined the work on the Soviet atomic project. Upon Kurchatov’s initiative on creation of centres of atomic science in the USSR, the Institute for Nuclear Research in Kiev with VVR-M reactor was established, other scientific centres and nuclear power plants, where specialists of our Institute worked side by side with their Ukrainian colleagues.
The Chernobyl NPP, where the Kurchatovites were the very next day after the accident and, together with other scientists, engineers, and firefighters, performed real heroism, doing everything to minimize its consequences, having built the “Shelter” over the destroyed power unit in just six months.
Our legendary director, academician Anatoly Petrovich Alexandrov, for whom Ukraine was home, with his great human scale, intellect, and talent, was himself the brightest representative of that truly brotherly republic.
It was all the more difficult for us to see how everything we had built together had crumbled over the past 30 years. Scientific contacts, long-standing cooperation, partnership and friendship had been discontinued. We have seen the steady decline of science in Ukraine, and the transformation of the country, primarily due to the efforts of Western “partners”, into a neo-Nazi bridgehead.
Even today, the Kurchatov team continues to work for the benefit of national and world science and in the interests of national security. We are well aware of the danger of new weapons that are being developed in the laboratories on Russia’s borders.
That is why we fully support the decision of the President of the Russian Federation to conduct a special military operation, understanding that it is aimed at demilitarizing and denationalizing Ukraine, preventing the threat of a direct attack on our country from its territory.
At this difficult time for everyone, the unity and cohesion of the academic community are more important than ever. We believe that the situation will soon change and the partnership between our countries and cooperation in science and culture will revive.

Курчатовский институт уже без малого 80 лет работает для страны и мира. В тяжелейшем для страны 1943 году сотрудники Лаборатории № 2 приступили к созданию атомного щита, совершив научный и технологический прорыв, благодаря чему на десятилетия был обеспечен мир на Земле.
И почти все эти годы в наших работах, исследованиях, дружеских и родственных связях присутствовала Украина. В 1930-е годы И.В. Курчатов во многом способствовал развитию ядерной физики на Украине, благодаря чему коллеги из Харьковского физтеха впоследствии включились в работы по советскому атомному проекту. По инициативе Курчатова о создании центров атомной науки в СССР был основан Институт ядерных исследований в Киеве с реактором ВВР-М, другие научные центры и АЭС, где работали специалисты нашего института бок о бок с украинскими коллегами.
Чернобыльская АЭС, где курчатовцы были уже на следующий день после аварии и вместе с другими учёными, инженерами, пожарными совершили настоящий подвиг, сделав все для минимизации ее последствий, всего за полгода соорудив “Укрытие” над разрушенным энергоблоком.
Наш легендарный директор, академик Анатолий Петрович Александров, для которого Украина была родиной, с его огромным человеческим масштабом, интеллектом, талантом, сам был ярчайшим представителем той по-настоящему братской республики.
Тем тяжелее было нам видеть, как на протяжении последних 30 лет рушилось все, созданное нами вместе. Прекращались научные контакты, многолетнее сотрудничество, партнёрские и дружеские отношения. Мы наблюдали неуклонное угасание науки на Украине, превращение страны, прежде всего, усилиями западных “партнеров”, в плацдарм неонацизма.
Курчатовцы и сегодня продолжают работать на благо отечественной и мировой науки, и в интересах национальной безопасности. Мы хорошо осознаем всю опасность новых видов вооружений, которые разрабатываются в лабораториях на границах России.
Поэтому мы полностью поддерживаем решение Президента Российской Федерации о проведении специальной военной операции, понимая, что она направлена на демилитаризацию и денацификацию Украины, предотвращая угрозу прямого нападения с ее территории на нашу страну.
В это сложное для всех время как никогда важны единство и сплоченность научного сообщества. Мы верим, что ситуация скоро изменится и партнёрские отношения наших стран, сотрудничество в науке и культуре возродятся.
